SOCIAL MEDIA ART PROJECT WOOOO

Friends! I am writing a piece of music for the Atlantic Reed Consort based on tweets by the eponymous twitterbot account Horse Ebooks and I need your help!  The piece will be a set of miniatures, each lasting no longer than 140 seconds.  I need you to choose your favorite tweet from the list below.  I’m aiming for 15-16 movements; 5 chosen by the performing ensemble, about 5 chosen by me, and 5 chosen by my fellow internet-dwellers.  Below is a list that I have laid out through the tireless art of combing the internet, and I would like you to “vote” for one that you would like to see included in this piece, either by reblogging this post, or responding to the adjoining facebook/twitter posts.  You might note that a very popular tweet is omitted from this list, mostly because I’ve already written a movement for it.  You can read a clearer explanation of my goals for this piece and vote based on those guidelines, or you can just choose whatever one tickles your fancy, see if I care!  You may “write-in” a candidate tweet not found on this list, but I will strictly choose the top 5 responses to this post.

So, listed in no particular order, which of these do you want me to make music for?

Since I am going to group these miniatures together under one artistic umbrella, I have a few ideas of what this piece will really be about.  For one thing, I’m trying to look at each of these tweets as being a short poem that either play into or work against the following narrative:

The internet was conceived as a device that could shrink our world and bring us together with strangers irrespective of distance.  In the 21st century, however, this connectivity has caused many of us to turn inward and become consumed by our own selves and web presences, often resulting in the measurement of worth based on social media popularity.  This piece will aim to bring to light the potential of the internet: to expand global consciousness and to become a cause for a greater humanity; to allow us to make a change and reach anyone not only irrespective of distance, but irrespective of geography and economy.

A lofty goal, I know.  But as you can tell, I really like to be ironic, so I chose as a representative of the internet an extremely popular (among humans) account that isn’t run by a human at all, but an algorithm that randomly excerpts texts from random sources.  An algorithm which, while completely ignorant of language and poetics, manages to capture the spirit of being a human with a short attention span and insatiable appetite for aesthetic stimulation.

Thank you in advance for your help and for playing along.

JacobTV’s piece White Flag, uses sound samples from Youtube about the war in Iraq. This is the badass and sobering last movement.

Elliott Carter, the great contemporary composer, passed away today at the age of 103.  Here he is talking about music and it’s pretty damn interesting.
